An estimated 1.5 million people in Illinois suffer from substance use disorders. In FY06, an estimated 98,000 Illinoisans received services through the publicly funded treatment system. With the loss of $55 million dollars, it is estimated that over 42,000 people will no longer be able to access these live-saving services. September, as National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, offers a perfect framework for our ongoing advocacy efforts to educate the public and legislators and to restore funding for treatment. Recovery Month is a nationwide celebration of people in long-term recovery from substance use disorders and their families, and is supported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The 2008 National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month theme is "Join the Voices for Recovery: Real People, Real Recovery". IADDA joins our local, state and national partners to celebrate those in recovery who have a renewed outlook on life.  We honor the treatment and recovery support providers who dedicate their life's work to saving others from this deadly disease.
